Subject: Prescribed Burn Near Lake Mathews
Full Text:

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be conducting a prescribed burn on 40 acres south of the intersection of Cajalco and La Sierra on the Estelle Mountain Reserve. The burning is scheduled for June 5th 2012. The burn has two benefits. First, this is part of a pre-fire plan to keep a major fire from moving into the reserve and to provide safe emergency egress for citizens and ingress for fire fighting equipment. Second, the burn will help manage the non-native weeds and help the ecosystem on the reserve. In addition, the fuel-modified zone will better enable the fire department to keep fires that might start in the reserve into moving into the surrounding communities.

The burning operations utilize CAL FIRE and BLM fire engines, and CAL FIRE Conservation Camp Fire Crews. The Lake Mathews Vegetation Management Program (VMP) is one of several planned programs in Riverside County Communities area to mitigate hazards and educate the public in advance of a major wildfire.

Burning operations will typically begin after 7:30 AM and will conclude by 3:00 PM each day of burning. The burning operations will only occur on permissive burn days as determined by the Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and CAL FIRE /Riverside County Fire Department; and if weather conditions are in appropriate parameters.
